Higuera de Vargas to Badajoz

Another superb day but I’m not yet ready for the heat. It might come in the next month if I’ve got any unburnt skin left. I was able to have an early (ish) start by cycling down to the bar where I arranged the room, where I had been told I could leave the keys. Still 0820 before I left even though I got up in the dark. There was a long hill soon after the start to warm me up. Lots of streams to cross. I started just taking a photo but decided as I was going to cycle across anything without huge waves and I had got everything in a plastic bag that I would video any further crossings.

About 20 stones to fall off or just go for It? No choice really!

They just keep coming. I’ll have to end up submerged sometime.

The idea is that when I hit the big stone or find the 3 feet deep one I’d like to see it if not willingly participate. They are all in the cloud at the link given along with all photos apart from the camera I still haven’t sussed yet. If it doesn’t work please tell me as I can’t check. I know the water gets in the front wheel hub because it squeaked for about 10 minutes. Repair once home if it lasts that long. I’ve got a spare bearing (doesn’t everybody).

Stop for refreshment

Most stork nests aren’t occupied yet.

Stopped to let cows pass with horse riders in attendance

I arrived at Olivera before 12 so I was kind of forced to go to Badajoz.

The mud dried on the bike. Just waiting for gravel to wear the frame away.

It got hotter and hotter and I remembered how I’m not good in the heat of the afternoon when the temperature rises (27C today). I had to revert to gloves and specs as my sunburn was showing. Even UV50 doesn’t help when water is splashing about and I’m sweating.

Weir and fish pass near Badajoz. I’m resting in the shade

Entering Badajoz. Wind from in front, as always

Results for the day: 76.41km 579m ascent 12.5km/hr 19th. Got back the time lost on the first day.

Finished all my water but only ate half the cheese bocadillo. As soon as I found a hotel I could get into (30€) I showered and found a helado (Ice cream) place for water, coffee and ice cream. Revived me and sussed out a good restaurant (Galaxia). I can’t remember the name so I’ve written it here. 11 minute walk.

Found it all right with Google maps. Hope it works ok on the way back. Arrived at 8 but as expected no service until 0910. Lots of beer and translation.

Ordered gazpacho followed by Sea Bass.

On the way to the restaurant. I’d like this at home.

Gazpacho with bits

Sea Bass grilled. Beautifully cooked, some would say on the small size.

Pineapple for after with coffee after
