Cabeza del Buey to Castuera

I was intending for today to be a day off but with no telephone reception and no wifi in the room it wasn’t to be.

On one of the steps up to my room. Moth fully 100mm across. Now identified as Saturnia pyri, the giant peaock, the largest European moth

Found him outside my door. He did get in.

I left at 10 and was in Castuera by 12 but the hotel in the centre had has closed a while ago so I’m on the outskirts.

Good quality gravel road. Undulating but easy passage.

More likely to be an eagle? What One? All photos of the same bird.

Hoopoe. I haven’t taken any photos of LBJs but it’s a lazy day today. No shortage of rocks in the fields. Bigger rocks, forming hills all around. There’s metals in thar rocks.

The olives are still tiny.

A lazy day of eating, washing clothes and catching up on things.

Paella. It’s taken a month for my first One!

Cod with tomato (small part) and potato.

I’ll leave earlyish and see where i get to. I’m not needing to rush, but Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be cool, so I’d like to be near Monesterio by Sunday, but not there if I can.

Squid with onions, but I ate a lot of bread to soak up the onions etc.

The ice cream helped settle me.

Stats for today. 24km 283m 13.4km/ hr 1.47 hrs Castuera hotel Los Naranjos

Still 154km and over 2100m ascent still to go. I won’t be in Monesterio tomorrow.

    Paella!!!!! Fab.
    And Hoopoe, excellent 😀
We have achieved mainland, and good job as ferry cancelled today.

Paella is an almost forbidden treat for the solo traveller. Saw that you went via Tiree but assume you didn’t get to step onshore. Lucky to get off. I was worried in Tiree as I’d gone for the wind but didn’t want it on the ferry day.

We were due on Tiree on Wednesday and had to go there Thursday as ferry goes Coll to Tiree then back to Coll then onto Oban. We were on Tiree for 10mins as we had to join the back of the queue. Then went back onto the same ferry as there was room on it (not guaranteed until we got to Tiree) to take us back to Oban via Coll where we had set of from 2hrs earlier! The joys of Calmac! Comprendo?!

Sorry, I find that kind of funny. You couldn’t make it up, could you.

We found it funny after the boat departed Coll for the 2nd time. We were awaiting enroute to Coll an announcement along the lines of, “could the drivers of camper P055 KHU please disembark as ….” There was only space for 2 cars when it finally left Coll for Oban….

We’ll both be back soon. 🙁
